Financial Literacy

Today B2 and B3 are watching a clip from the book 'Arthur's Pet Business' to tie in with their financial literacy unit.  We are also using Arthur's Website for activities afterwards.  http://pbskids.org/arthur/games/supermarket/supermarket.html

International Dot Day

Look for The Dot

I was working with  B1, B2 and B3 yesterday and we were using the book "The Dot" by Peter Reynolds as it is Dot Day tomorrow.  We had a lot of fun creating our own Dots with the app "Drawing Pad" on the IPads.  The classes enjoyed the story and learnt that we all have a contribution to make and to keep trying.  Take a look at the International Dot Day Website below:-

Welcome Back to Term 3

Hope you all had a wonderful holiday break.  The Library Dragon had a lovely time on her holiday.
Unfortunately the Library will be closed this term while the re-building work is going on.
This term will be exciting with the 2012 Olympics in London.  See the clip below.  We have some wonderful books in the Library by Michael Morpurgo who wrote this story about the Mascots for the London Olympics.  This is just Part One of the story.

Ready for Another Quz?

These pictures were taken in the Library.  Can you guess what they are.  Leave an answer for me in the comments box.  Hopefully, I have made them harder this time!

And one for the Year 2's you should know this one!!

Welcome back to a new Term.  The first week has been really busy.  Hope you were all doing plenty of reading over the holidays!
In the last week of the first term the Juniors celebrated Grandparents Day and one class  (B2) brought their Grandparents into the Library to read to them.  It was wonderful to see so many Grandparents in the Library.

This YouTube clip is from a bookstore in Toronto called Type.  The owners decided to shelve all their books in colours and animated the process. It took them weeks to complete!

They had lots of volunteers to help with the shelving and re-shelving.  It must have been a lot of work but the video is great to watch.

Meet the Library Dragon who lives in the Library Office with me.  The book is one of my favourite picture books and the name of my blog.  I have been introducing her to some of the classes over the last week.  Look out for her when you come in.

I had a lovely Library Time with B3 on Tuesday.  As the Library blog is called 'The Library Dragon' I introduced my Library Dragon puppet to the class.  They were pleased to see her and Mrs Domican is going to read the book to them.  It's one of my favourite picture books, of course!!!

Congratulations to A9.  They correctly guessed the First Line of a Book Competition. Sam from G1 came a close second.  Well done!  Kate from B2 got 2 out of three correct.  Thank you to those classes that entered.

William Joyce

This short film,  is going around the Library Blogs at the moment.  It is really well done and is about a man whose books are his only friends.  It takes about 15 minutes so you need to allow some time to watch it.  We have books in the Library by William Joyce, 'Bently and Egg', 'A Day With Wilbur Robinson', 'Dinosaur Bob', 'George Shrinks' and 'The Leaf Men'.  There is a really good IPad app for this as well have a look if you get the chance.

Name that Book

This week's competition is the first sentence of a book.  You have to name that book.  There are three categories, Senior, Middle and Junior.

Senior

1.  'When the doorbell rings at three in the morning, it's never good news.
2.  'Everybody knows the Story of the Three Little Pigs or at least they think they do.'
3.  'If you went into a school nowadays and said to the children: "What is a gump?" you would probably get some very silly answers.'

Middle

1.  "Where's Papa Going with that axe?" said Fern to her mother as they were setting the table for breakfast.
2.  'Mr Piggott lived with his two sons, Simon and Patrick, in a nice house with a nice garden and a nice car in the nice garage.'
3.  'These two very old people are the father and mother of Mr Bucket.'

Junior

1.  'The sun did not shine.  It was too wet to play.'
2.  'Camilla Cream loved lima beans.  But she never ate them.'
3.  'Our story starts with a lump of pastry that Horace's Mum gave him, which Horace would usually roll about over the floor and furniture until it was deep grey and fluffy.'

(or put your answers into the comments section)

Photo Competition

Congratulations to E4 who correctly guessed the photo competition.  Well done!  Also a special mention to A9 the first class to send me an email but unfortunately got one wrong.  In case you were wondering the answers are:-
Part of the scarf from the Harry Potter painting, the star from Lilly's boots in the book kite from Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse and part of a chair in the Library.  Look out for next week's puzzle.
It's been wonderful seeing all your faces again in the Library.  The Library will open again at lunchtime in the third week, as next week I will be training the new Librarians for 2012.
For a bit of fun this week can you look at the photos below.  They have been taken in the Library and they are part of something that is in the Library.  I have zoomed in on the object so the photo is showing a very small part.  Hint:  they are not books!!  Email me with your answers library@easternhutt.school.nz

Back to School!!

Welcome back.  I hope you have been reading lots of books over the holidays.  We have new picture and fiction books in the Library on green dot.  You will notice that half of the non-fiction books are packed away.  This is because the roof and interior of the Library will be worked on in March.  For the month of February you will only be able to issue one book out but you can change that book as many times as you like.

I will take a photo of the Librarians soon and put it up on the blog.  Enjoy your first week.
